The world is not a safe place for women, for some not even their homes. Blame it on patriarchy or the way society has been conditioned or functions, a woman’s safety is one issue we need to battle with utmost urgency. Until we do that, for women, it is important to know tricks or two on how to keep themselves protected under stressful or violent situations. If you ever happen to find yourself in a harmful situation, keep some tricks handy, for it’s universally accepted that a person must protect themselves from harm under situations, even when that behaviour would include a crime.

What Is Self Defense?

Self-defence is interpreted as the right to prevent suffering force or violence. It also involves defending the health and well-being of oneself from harm. The definition is simple but the use of the right of self-defence in times of danger is available in many jurisdictions.

For instance, what is a sufficient level of force or violence when defending oneself? What goes beyond that level? What if the victim intentionally provoked the attack?. Here are 3 self-defence women trainers you should know about.

1. Richa Gaur

Richa Gaur is a famous name in the world of self defence. She is a muay thai expert and a self defence coach. She is from Jaipur and is India’s top martial art expert who went on to become a self-defence coach. Gaur’s achievements are something that made her confident as she is an Asian Olympic Qualifier, eight-time national gold medallist, and an international champion. Gaur started her career in martial arts with Taekwondo. After winning a silver medal in Rajasthan Taekwondo Junior Championship in 2011 she also won a gold medal in Muay Thai in 2012.

The journey of her becoming The Muay Thai Queen Of India was not easy, including dealing with financial crisis along the way. Coming from a small city, Gaur had no money to participate in games and family and society pressured her to study and get married. Since Gaur was born underweight the society labelled her as weak. Today, her mission is to empower girls with confidence and power so that they can live without any hesitation and fear.

2. Mary Kom

Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom an Indian amateur boxer, politician, and incumbent Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha. Kom was born in Kangathei village, Moirang Lamkhai in Churachandpur district of rural Manipur in India. She is the only female to become World Amateur Boxing champion for a record six times, only female to win a medal in each one of the first seven World Championships, and the only boxer (male or female) to win eight World Championship medals.

Kom is the first amateur athlete to win the Padma Bhushan. She faced a lot of challenges while pursuing a career in boxing. She had to convince herself she belonged to it as making a career in boxing was not too common. Few people also considered that Kom will never comeback after the birth of her children, but she proved all naysayers wrong with her talent and victories.

3. Geeta Phogat

Geeta Phogat, who was born in Balali village of Charkhi Dadri district, Haryana, is a wrestler who won India’s first-ever gold medal in wrestling at the Commonwealth Games in 2010 held in New Delhi. She is also the first Indian female wrestler to have qualified for the Olympic Summer Games. In the 2012 World Wrestling Championships held in Canada, Phogat won the bronze medal.

Geeta grew up in a family where people give more preference to a male child as compared to daughters. For this reason, her mother Daya wanted to have a boy, not a girl. Hence Geeta was into wrestling and became one of the best female wrestlers.
